The Bloody Lane at Antietam – Watercolor Style Print

Description

A watercolor style print based upon a photo taken looking up the famous Sunken Road, commonly known as the Bloody Lane, on the Antietam Battlefield. The monument to the 132nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry stands to the left of the lane and, in the distance, rises the observation tower. Union soldiers attacked Confederate soldiers that had taken a position in the natural protection offered by this sunken road. The battle here raged for three hours and resulted in 5,500 casualties. When Union General Alpheus Williams looked upon the Bloody Lane after the fighting was finished, he noted that the Confederate bodies in the road “lay as thick as autumn leaves.” The tranquil scene presented here reminds us that peace once again reigns where so much blood was spilled on September 17, 1863.
