The Design:
This art is based upon a photograph that I took at Gettysburg more than fifteen years ago. I was walking in the famous Wheatfield, where bitter fighting on July 2nd, 1863, left the wheat trampled, bloodied, and covered with the wounded and dead, when I stopped to admire the stunning colors of the natural landscape, now restored and peaceful, more than a century after the battle ended. I took a photograph from behind one of the cannons that marks the position of Winslow’s Union Battery. The contrast between the patina on the bronze cannon barrel, the painted wheels, the bright autumn colors of the leaves and ground, made for a stunning photograph. It is still one of my favorite photographs from the battlefield. Although the colors and sky and been artistically refined for what you see here, I think it truly captures the emotional reaction that I had on that day.
