The Design:
I actually knew little about Krampus and Perchtens (another Austrian Christmas creature) until I moved to Vienna and then I learned quite a bit about this fascinating and celebrated Christmas tradition. Krampus and Perchten are distinctive figures in Austrian Christmas traditions, embodying the darker side of the holiday season. Krampus, a horned, fearsome creature, is known for punishing misbehaving children, serving as a stark contrast to the jolly Saint Nicholas. Perchten, similarly, are mythological beings who appear in winter festivals, particularly in the Alpine regions, often wearing elaborate masks and costumes.
This elaborate and colorful oil paint syle version of Krampus is actually based upon a photo of one of the costumes worn at a holiday parade of the creatures. The Krampus in the photo was holding a red flare, but it was reminiscent, to me, of fire shooting from it’s hand.
